Last night was an absolute delight as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang soared onto the stage for its opening night at Sheffield's Lyceum Theatre. A completely sold-out performance, it was a jubilant spectacle from beginning to end.
The UK Tour cast and production delivered a resounding success. From the very first notes of the overture to the exuberant costumes and lively choreography- each musical number was met with enthusiastic cheers, laughter, and beaming smiles from audience members of all ages.
Based on Ian Fleming’s 1964 novel (yes, the same Ian Fleming behind James Bond) and the beloved 1968 film starring Hollywood icon Dick Van Dyke, this stage adaptation was an utter joy.
For those unfamiliar with the story, the plot follows the Potts family and their escapades with a truly magical car. Adam Garcia was utterly charming as Caractacus Potts, bringing warmth and charisma to every scene and song. As Jeremy and Jemima Potts, Roshan Thompson and Gracie Cochrane were wonderful, while Ellie Nunn dazzled as Truly Scrumptious, especially showcasing her vocal prowess in Doll on a Music Box and Lovely, Lonely Man. Scene-stealers Boris (Adam Stafford) and Goran (Michael Stafford) had the audience in stitches with their impeccable comedic timing and dynamic chemistry.
Similarly, every appearance of the Baron (Martin Callaghan) and Baroness (Jenny Gayner) was met with continuous laughter. The ensemble truly elevated this production, with standout moments including Come to the Funfair and Me Ol’ Bamboo, which highlighted Morgan Large’s spectacular costumes and
Karen Bruce’s vibrant choreography.
It was very special to hear the Sherman Brothers’ legendary songs performed live at the Lyceum. Having grown up listening to their iconic works (Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, It’s a Small World, to name a few), experiencing the fresh orchestral arrangements of classics like Hushabye Mountain and the title song Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was deeply moving. The orchestra, under the direction of Jessica Viner, had the entire theatre clapping along from the opening bars of the overture right through to the final bows. Their music continues to resonate across generations, as evident from the joy and energy radiating throughout the audience.
The evening concluded on a poignant note as the cast paid tribute to their late castmate, The Vivienne (RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 1 Winner), who tragically passed away in January. The role of The Childcatcher, which they would have played, was wonderfully performed last night by Callum Train. In
their memory, the cast dedicated their entire Sheffield Theatres run to The Vivienne, a touching homage to their friend and very missed castmate.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre until Saturday 1 March—perfect for a half-term theatre outing.
