Sensoria and Reel Steel Present ‘Shaolin Invincibles’ (1977) Featuring a Live Score by Chipzel

Sensoria has been shaking up the Sheffield cultural scene since 2008, with events that expertly explore the intersection of music and film. Meanwhile, Reel Steel has been treating Sheffield’s film lovers to screenings of cult classics, often shown in their original formats, from 35mm prints to retro gaming events. Now joining forces they’re creating a night that blends the best of both worlds - classic cinema and cutting-edge live music.

On Friday 4th October, at Sheffield University’s Drama Studio, Sensoria x Reel Steel brings you something truly special: a screening of the Taiwanese martial arts classic Shaolin Invincibles (1977), complete with a brand-new live score by BAFTA-nominated video game composer Chipzel.

Starring martial arts legends Judy Lee and Carter Wong, Shaolin Invincibles follows two sisters as they seek revenge for their family’s murder. Their journey takes them through epic battles with kung-fu gorillas, assassins, and even the supernatural guardians of the underworld – what’s not to love?

Now imagine all of this outlandish action and these incredible fight scenes set to the high-energy sounds of Chipzel, known for her retro-inspired, 8-bit music from video games like Super Hexagon and Dicey Dungeons. For this event, she has produced a brand-new live score, bringing a modern twist to the film’s old-school kung-fu thrills. The combination of her pulse-pounding beats with the film’s fast-paced action promises to make this an unforgettable cinema experience.

In addition to the film and live score, there will be a special introduction by Dr. Wayne Wong, a lecturer from the University of Sheffield’s School of East Asian Studies. Dr. Wong will provide some fascinating context about the film, its place in martial arts cinema, and the cultural influences behind it, giving you a deeper appreciation of the wild world you’re about to step into.

Whether you’re a fan of martial arts movies, retro video games, or just looking for something high energy and different to do on a Friday night, this event has something for everyone. Don’t miss out!
