The Heat Is On In Sheffield: Unveiling the Cast of Sheffield Theatres' production of Miss Saigon

Yesterday Sheffield Theatres announced the highly anticipated new cast for their reimagination of the critically acclaimed musical, Miss Saigon. With an infusion of talent and energy, this production promises to captivate audiences in Sheffield when it opens at the Crucible on Saturday 8th July. As the curtains prepare to rise on the Steel City for this highly anticipated production, let’s take a closer look at the cast and creatives who will be bringing this beloved show to life when it opens next month.

Based on Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly, Miss Saigon is set towards the end of the Vietnam War in which a Vietnamese bargirl named Kim meets Chris, an American GI, “and in one fateful night, their lives become entwined forever” (Sheffield Theatres’ wording). With music by Claude-Michel Schonberg, lyrics by Alain Boubil (both of Les Misérables fame) and by special arrangement with Cameron Mackintosh; this production marks the first “non-replica” regional version of the hit musical. With incredible songs such as Movie In My Mind, The Heat Is On In Saigon, Last Night of the World, and Movie In My Mind; this moving story and poignant music is sure to stay with you long after the curtains come down.

Previously announced, Joanna Ampil is the first woman to play the role of The Engineer, a role made famous by Sir Jonathan Pryce in the Original London Cast in 1989. Ampil has previously performed the role of Kim in London, Sydney, with the UK touring cast and in the 10th anniversary productions of Miss Saigon. Joining Ampil, is a full cast including: Desmonda Cathabel as Mimi and Alternate Kim, Aynrand Ferrer as Gigi; Shanay Holmes as Ellen, Jessica Lee as Kim and Alternate Mimi, Ethan Le Phong as Thuy, Christian Maynard as Chris, Emily Ooi as Yvonne and Understudy Gigi, Shane O’Riordan as John, Ericka Posadas as Fifi and Understudy The Engineer. The entire cast makes their Sheffield Theatres debut with Miss Saigon.

This regional production is directed by Robert Hastie and Anthony Lau, with musical direction by Chris Poon. Tickets are on sale now at sheffieldtheatres.co.uk, through the box office in person or over the phone by calling 0114 249 6000. Miss Saigon will be playing at the Crucible from Saturday 8th July – Saturday 19th August 2023.
